- 80s–90s की किताबों/स्टडीज़ की ज्यादातर finding US / developed markets पर, अलग cost-structure और अलग volatility regimes में बनी हैं।
- NIFTY/NIFTY 500 के लिए कम-से-कम ऐसे डेटा-बकेट पर test करना अच्छा रहेगा:
- Pre-2008 (pre-global-crisis)
- 2008–2013 (high volatility, policy noise)
- 2014–2019 (स्टेबल growth, domestic flows)
- 2020–अब तक (COVID shock + liquidity flood + नया retail regime)
- अगर कोई logic इन सब regimes में survive करता है (भले ही parameter थोड़ा adjust करना पड़े), तभी उसे आज के लिए भरोसे के लायक मानना बेहतर है।
2. Entry vs Exit की relative-importance को अपने data पर measure करना
जो आप plan कर रहे हैं (entry fix करके exits vary, फिर exit fix करके entries vary) – ये बिल्कुल वैसा ही है जैसा serious system developers करते हैं:
- Step A: Entry fix, exits vary
- एक ही entry-rule (जैसे simple trend-following या mean-reversion पर आधारित rule)
- अलग-अलग exit-frameworks:
- Fixed R-multiple target + fixed stop
- Trailing stop variations (ATR-based, % based, swing-low/high based)
- Time-based exit (X bars/दिन के बाद, चाहे कुछ भी हो)
- Compare:
- CAGR / expectancy per trade
- Max drawdown
- Risk-adjusted metric (जैसे Sharpe / MAR)
- Step B: Exit framework fix, entries vary
- एक robust और practically-useable exit चुनकर fix कर दीजिए (जो risk-containment अच्छा कर रहा हो)
- फिर multiple entry-ideas test कीजिए (breakout, pullback, momentum rank, mean reversion, etc.)
- वही metrics compare कीजिए — ताकि साफ़ दिखे:
- Profitability में असली variation ज़्यादा entry से आ रहा है या exit से?
- Position sizing / risk per trade दोनों experiments में constant रखिए, नहीं तो entry vs exit का असर साफ़ measure नहीं होगा।
3. Conceptual angle (Van Tharp vs “own data”)
- General research ये बताती है:
- Edge आमतौर पर ज़्यादा entry design से आता है (आप किस तरह की market-condition capture कर रहे हैं)।
- Distribution shaping / risk-control ज़्यादातर exits से आता है (आप losers को कहाँ काटते हैं, winners को कितना चलने देते हैं)।
- लेकिन किस market/regime में कौन-सा हिस्सा ज़्यादा critical है, ये सिर्फ़ आपके NIFTY 500 panel पर rigorous testing से ही साफ़ होगा – इसीलिए आपका “सिर्फ़ Tharp पर नहीं, अपने data से confirm” वाला point बिल्कुल valid है और ज़रूरी भी।
4. Practical cautions (ताकि results genuinely भरोसेमंद हों)
- Survivorship bias:
- NIFTY 500 का “today’s constituents only” use मत कीजिए; historical panel में उस समय index में रहे और बाद में delist/merge हुए stocks भी शामिल हों।
- Look-ahead bias:
- Signals बनाते समय केवल वही data use हो जो उस दिन तक उपलब्ध था (future info accidentally leak न हो)।
- Transaction costs & slippage:
- खासकर India में impact cost और taxes (STT आदि) बहुत फर्क डालते हैं। Raw backtest में edge दिखे, पर realistic cost जोड़ते ही गायब हो सकती है।
- Multiple testing:
- बहुत सारे entries/exits test करने पर कुछ combination purely luck से अच्छे दिखेंगे।
- इसलिए:
- Data को in-sample / out-of-sample में बाँट कर test कीजिए
- या walk-forward style validation रखिए
- छोटे differences (जैसे CAGR 18% vs 19%) को statistically और practically both angles से देखिए।
5. Interaction को भी देखिए, सिर्फ़ “कौन ज़्यादा important” नहीं
- कई बार कुछ exits सिर्फ़ कुछ specific entries के साथ ही अच्छे काम करते हैं – यानी effect “interaction” है, isolated नहीं।
- अगर possible हो तो छोटा-सा factorial design बनाकर check कीजिए: 2–3 entry-types × 2–3 exit-types, और देखिए कौन combinations structurally अच्छे रहते हैं, न कि एक-दो साल के लिए lucky।
निष्कर्ष:
- Regime-wise re-testing + entry-vs-exit importance को अपने NIFTY 500 data पर quantify करने का आपका Phase-0-Discovery-plan directionally बिल्कुल सही है, और serious quant/systematic workflow जैसा है।
